Some tips and advice for projection.

If you are considering a projector "set up" for a Bar, Night Club, outdoor event or large venue, such as a conference hall, then you need to consider your choice very carefully, a "home" projector will not do!

This little FAQ will help you decide the right equipment for your purpose.
Getting the best image!

Firstly,
if you think you are going to get a projector from the local retail electrical store and use it in a professional environment, forget it! Nearly all those projectors sold by that type of store are designed for home use and they will require a pretty dark environment in order to produce a "pleasing image" on a large screen, "turn the lights off love"!

You need to consider many factors when purchasing a projector, because they are NOT all the same! Most important is the light in your projection environment, especially where daylight is concerned. You also need to consider the "throw" of the projector, that is, the distance it needs to be placed from the screen to obtain the desired image size.

Confused? Don't be, let us explain !

Light: Take my advice, if you are thinking of a screen of 100" or more, in a well lit area, then you have to consider at least a 3,500 lumens professional projector, for front projection, maybe even 4,500 lumens in daylight.  Under 100" screen size and OK, you may get away with a 3,000 lumen projector. If the environment is quite dark, a 2,500 lumen may then suffice. You see,  It's all about competing light and the hardest light to deal with, is daylight. For super large screen sizes, over 150", then you are entering into the world of professional projectors, that is, if you want a decent image in a light environment.

Throw: The throw distance is the distance your projector will need to be placed away from the screen in order to produce the desired image size. So, when purchasing a projector, the "throw distance" is also another important decision, the home projectors sold in stores are unlikely to have anything more than a basic zoom lens, if any at all. This means, to get an image of 100" diagonal, the projector may need to be placed 5-9 meters from the screen, for many smaller venues that will be a big issue. It also means more area where people cannot walk, without affecting the screen, unless the screen is placed well above head height.  So, you may need a projector with a Zoom lens, or special "short throw lens", to overcome this problem.

Screen: The type of screen you use is going to make a big difference to your projector choice too. Traditional white screens work perfect in a darker environment, but are pretty bad when it comes to daylight, or brightly lit areas. In this type of environment you are far better off considering a rear projection (retro projection) screen, as they offer far more brightness and clarity in bright environments.  If you must use front projection, then consider your projector carefully, get more lumens, rather than less and the highest contrast ratio you can.

Let me tell you something, a good quality projection is about getting lots of things right, try to do it too cheaply and you will wish you had never done it at all.  Costa del Sol projectors can offer Expert advice in getting the right projector and screen, we believe in getting it right first time!

For the Average bar with plenty of light, you should be considering, around 2,000 to 3,000 Euros for your equipment, that will give you an amazing professional screen day and night. Remember, a 100" screen is 4 x 50" screens in size, something that can still only be done with projection!
